We believe in change

We are a grassroots 501c3 that helps people and their families impacted by gun violence through counseling, community-based services and alternative solutions. We also work with people with disabilities brought on by strokes, muscular dystrophy, and other life-changing illnesses. Our funding comes from modest donations from friends, family and people in the community who support our mission.

We work in conjunction with the Medstar National Rehabilitation Hospital in Northwest Washington to provide:

  • Peer Counseling with Dr. Samuel A Gordon, a clinical psychologist who specializes in children, adolescents, and adults with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities. He provides psychotherapeutic interventions aimed at addressing suffering associated with psychological and physical pains that stem from long-term physical and medical disabling conditions. He has been with MedStar NRH since 1989.

  • Peer Counseling for families who have loved ones hurt by gunfire.

  • Occupational therapy

  • Training to become mentors to vulnerable youth in low-income neighborhoods.

  • Activities to strengthen peer support.

ABOUT OUR NAME

The foundation is named after the 1964 Sam Cooke song, “A Change Gonna Come,” which was inspired by many events in Cooke’s life, but particularly the time he and his entourage were turned away from a whites-only motel in Shreveport, Louisiana. The song spoke to the civil rights movement and the need for change.

I still see senseless violence far too often. And too often it involves teenagers who could have chosen a different path had they gotten a little guidance from a wise adult who knows first-hand about street violence.

—JORDON COOK
